Ski Skeller Sports opened its doors on a cold November morning back in 1969. They had very high quality products, a great new storefront, but one thing was missing. No one knew anything about the ski business. There was another ski shop in Midland called Southwest Ski Styles on Big Spring St. which rented ski equipment and ski clothing. The owner was Dick Ragan, a Midland business-man who was born and raised in Odessa, Texas. His new ski shop was booming with the exploding popularity of snow skiing. Customers flocked to his store to rent skis, boots, and poles and headed to New Mexico and Colorado to explore this new and exciting sport. Ski Skeller Sports partnered with Dick Ragan and Southwest Ski Styles and made him co-owner and general manager. The rest you can say is history!

Ski Skeller Sports was then relocated at Garfield and Wadley, next to Montana Mining Company. At one time, there were 7 Ski Skeller Sports stores located in Midland, Lubbock, Dallas, Tulsa, El Paso, Houston, and Ruidoso, New Mexico. Ski Skeller Sports in Midland is the sole survivor of this regional chain. Ski Skeller Sports expanded its operations in 1980 when it moved to its present location on the corner of Wadley and Midkiff.

Through the years Ski Skeller Sports has expanded its product offerings to include water skiing, wakeboarding, surfboards, snowboarding, camping, backpacking, canoes & kayaks, lifestyle clothing, and sunglasses.

Scott Ragan (Dick’s son) started skiing when he was only two years old, and he still loves to ski today. So it was only natural that Scott wanted to learn the ski business. Scott and his wife Gina left the Dallas area after the birth of their twins Taner & Kortni to help out with the family business. Scott took over the reins as general manager in 1997. Although the management has changed, our general business philosophy has not.
